COMSOL Multiphysics 4.0

COMSOL Multiphysics – modeling package,
which solves the system of nonlinear differential equations in partial
derivatives of the finite element method in one, two and three
dimensions. It can meet the challenges of the field of
electromagnetism, elasticity, fluid dynamics and gas dynamics. COMSOL
also provides an opportunity to solve the problem as a mathematical
formulation (in the form of equations) and physical (the choice of
physical models, eg models of the diffusion process). Certainly, in any
case will be solved system of equations, and the difference lies only
in the possibility of using the physical system of units and physical
terminology. The so-called physical mode, you can also use pre-defined
equations for the majority of the phenomena taking place in science and
technology, such as the transfer of heat and electricity, the theory of
elasticity, diffusion, wave propagation and fluid flow.

Framework for modeling is greatly enhanced with a software module
COMSOL , which, although usually integrated with COMSOL
Multiphysics (included in standard delivery), but can also operate as a
standalone package. COMSOL – a language interpreter, which
includes more than 600 commands for numeric computations and
visualization in the command line mode. It allows you to create
different s (procedures, written in text format). Save the
template, made in COMSOL , can be a special model file (M-file),
the interface can be used from COMSOL . With ing, users can
perform interactive parametric studies and optimization, as well as
modeling. Thus, the graphics capabilities of the program COMSOL
set new standards for packages in this category, and special tools
allow you to quickly create graphical user interfaces.

In addition, COMSOL Multiphysics can also interact with the software package MATLAB.

CHAM is a company, located in Wimbledon, England. Its full name is Concentration Heat and Momentum Ltd.
Its business is, and has been since the 1970s, the provision of
software and related services concerned with the computer simulation of
processes involving the flow of fluids, together with the stresses and
temperatures in solids in contact with them.
PHOENICS is its principal software product. This is a general-purpose
package, first launched in 1981 and still pioneering new features.
One way in which it distinguishes itself from its competitors is the prominence it gives to RDI, i.e.

Special Features
IN-FORM
IN-FORM allows the user to add new physical and numerical features on a
case-by-case basis. This includes the input of problem-defining,
solution-controlling and results-presentation data using the VR Editor.
The user can do this by way of easy-to-write formulae which are
interpreted by the code which then performs the specified computation

MOFOR
MOFOR (MOving-Frame-Of-Reference) models flows induced by bodies in
motion. Uses for MOFOR range from the study of rotating machinery to
the air flow over a ski jumper to help optimise posture for the
reduction of drag and therefore maximise jump distance.

PARSOL
PARSOL (PARtial SOLid) enables PHOENICS to provide accurate flow
simulations without the need to create time consuming unstructured
grids. This makes PHOENICS accessible to the non-CFD expert as it
obviates the need to learn the tools to create such grids.

Guaranteed Convergence
A guaranteed automatic convergence algorithm has been developed and
included in the latest version of PHOENICS. Most CFD-code (ie not just
PHOENICS) users have, until now, had to adjust convergence and
relaxation parameters to achieve a converged solution. This development
removes the need to run a case overnight to find that it shows no sign
of convergence the following morning.

PHOENICS PLUS
PHOENICS PLUS (GROUND coding) allows users to create customised
environments to suit specific needs. Where an organisation does not
have the resources, or inclination, to undertake development CHAM
consultants will use PHOENICS PLUS to carry out the necessary work. If
problems involve unique or ground-breaking physics this may not be
included in the core of PHOENICS.

PHOENICS PLUS allows new physics to be added to augment or replace
standard definitions. IN-FORM achieves this on a case-by-case basis
whereas additions made using PHOENICS PLUS are available for all cases.

Computational Fluid Dynamics Software

FLOW-3D
is a powerful and highly-accurate computational fluid dynamics (CFD)
software that gives engineers valuable insight into many physical flow
processes. With special capabilities for accurately predicting
free-surface flows, FLOW-3D is the ideal CFD software to use in your
design phase as well as in improving production processes.

FLOW-3D
is an all-inclusive package. No special additional modules for meshing
or post-processing are needed. An integrated graphical user interface
ties everything together, from problem setup to post-processing.

Free Gridding Separates Meshing from Geometry Construction
FLOW-3D
uses an approach to gridding that combines the advantages of simple
rectangular grids with the flexibility of deformed, body-fitted grids.
The approach is referred to as “free-gridding” because grids or
geometry can be freely changed, each independent of the other. This
feature eliminates the tedious task of generating body-fitted or
finite-element grids. FLOW-3D uses a fixed grid of rectangular control
elements because these are simple to generate and possess many
desirable properties (e.g., improved accuracy, smaller demands on
memory, and simpler numerical approximations).

Modeling Fluid Flow in Complex Geometry is Easy with FAVOR™
FLOW-3D
incorporates a special technique, known as the FAVOR™ (Fractional Area
Volume Obstacle Representation) method, which is used to define general
geometric regions within the rectangular grid. The philosophy behind
FAVOR™ is that numerical algorithms are based on information consisting
of only one pressure, one velocity, one temperature, etc., for each
control volume, so it would be inconsistent to use much more
information to define the geometry. Thus, the FAVOR™ technique retains
the simplicity of rectangular elements while representing complex
geometric shapes at a level consistent with the use of averaged flow
quantities within each volume element.

TruVOF and Free Surface Modeling
FLOW-3D
differs from other CFD programs in its treatment of flowing fluid
surfaces. The program uses special numerical methods to track the
location of surfaces and to apply the proper dynamic boundary
conditions at those surfaces. In FLOW-3D, free surfaces are modeled
with the Volume of Fluid (VOF) technique that was first developed by a
group of scientists, including Flow Science’s founder, Dr. C. W. Hirt,
at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. A number of competing CFD
programs claim to have incorporated a VOF capability, when in reality
they implement only one or two of the three fundamental VOF
ingredients. Prospective users of CFD should be aware that these
pseudo-VOF schemes will often give incorrect results. FLOW-3D has all
of the ingredients recommended for the successful treatment of free
surfaces. Moreover, FLOW-3D incorporates major improvements beyond the
original VOF method to increase the accuracy of boundary conditions and
the tracking of interfaces. We refer to our implementation as TruVOF.

Multi-Block Meshing for Efficiency and Speed
FLOW-3D
offers multi-block meshing, which is designed to add even more
flexibility and efficiency to the finite difference meshing technique.
In a standard finite difference mesh, local refinements may lead to a
substantial increase in the total number of cells since mesh lines
extend all the way to domain boundaries in all three directions. Use of
multiple blocks allows such refinements to be more localized, and
therefore requires fewer computer resources. The multi-block feature is
especially useful in so-called "rangy" problems, where features exist
that are small compared to the overall domain size, like small
obstacles and thin channels. Using multiple mesh blocks, a user can
"link" individual blocks to mesh a "rangy" domain and mesh only the
areas of interest and limit the total number of computational cells.
Using a "nested" block, a user can enhance the resolution around an
area of interest.
